Serves: 2-3 people
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook/Bake Time: 45 minutes
1/4 cup cassava flour (what is this?)
1 egg, beaten
1-1/2 pounds ground beef (local, grass-fed if possible)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon coconut aminos (what is this?)
Salt/Pepper to taste
For Gravy
2 onions, thinly sliced
2 heaping tablespoons cassava flour
2 cups bone broth or beef broth
2 tablespoons chicken or beef base (gluten/grain free)
1/2 cup red wine (choose one that is not sweet)
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Salt/Pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Line baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with olive or coconut oil spray.
In large bowl, mix ground beef, egg, cassava flour, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, coconut aminos, and a generous amount of salt and pepper. Mix well.
Form beef mixture into 6 patties and place onto lined baking sheet.
Bake uncovered for 30 minutes in preheated oven.
While beef patties are baking, make gravy: In large saucepan heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onions and sauté until golden brown, 6-8 minutes. Sprinkle in cassava flour and stir together well. Add bone or beef broth and chicken or beef base; stir briskly to eliminate any lumps. Add red wine and stir. Reduce heat to medium-low stirring every once in a while, allowing gravy to thicken. If gravy seems too thick, add more red wine or broth. Add salt and pepper to taste, if necessary.
Once beef patties have cooked 30 min and are no longer pink in the middle, remove from oven and place right into gravy mixture. Cover with lid and cook additional 5-6 minutes.
Serve spooning gravy mixture over the top of each "steak."
Enjoy!
Note from Gabbi: I also added a couple teaspoons of Kirkland Signature no-salt seasoning (Costco brand) into the beef mixture before cooking, but it does have dried red bell pepper, tomato granules, and cayenne which could be problematic for some people. I myself do not seem to have any negative effect with this seasoning. I was so pleased with how the cassava flour thickened the gravy without any strange flavors. My husband did not even know if was grain free and I didn't tell him!
